Thursday Teaser

I thought I'd try something new here. I'm gonna call it the Thursday Teaser. I will try to post a teaser at least every other Thursday, though weekly is my goal. This week I think we will do a short teaser from The Dragon's Portal (book 1).

Then the most ghastly noise she had ever heard assaulted her ears, followed by a deep rumbling tremor. “What was that?” Amaya asked in horror. Another rumbling tremor was followed by more, almost like a giant's footsteps.

Aiden was quick to answer, “A dragon, miss. He guards this area, and probably thinks we have done something wrong. Humans are not exactly supposed to loiter in this area of the woods. I think we should leave this area right now before we end up being his next meal.”

Amaya gave him a skeptical look and turned to look behind her to figure out what the noise really was. To her great surprise, she could make out a huge beast with deep sapphire blue scales that matched her clothing almost exactly. She saw leathery wings and a huge spiked tail, also.  Dragons don’t exist! Amaya thought and with that fainted.

If you would like to hear the rest of the story, you can purchase here.

Not much has been happening so far this week...oh, who am I kidding, it's been one freakin train wreck after another, but I've muddling my way through. I haven't had much of a chance to write so far, but I'm hoping to fix that tomorrow. I'll probably be working on the second Dragon Portal book.

In other news, Ariel over at Sassy Princess Reviews left an awesome review for both The Dragon's Portal and Deviate. If you're interested, here they are: Dragon Portal & Deviate.

Hope everyone has an awesome week! Happy Reading Slayers!!

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS BLOG HOP

Blog Hop: 12 Days of Christmas
Event Date: December 1st - 12th 2013

So, yeah I kind of cheated. I don't usually make cookies, but divinity...we make it every year. It is so good and VERY addictive.

 Divinity
Original recipe makes 4 dozen (approximately) Change Servings
2 2/3 cups white sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
2 egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2/3 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions

1. Cook sugar, corn syrup, and water in a 2-quart pot over low heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. (On humid days, use 1 tablespoon less water.) Cook, without stirring, to 260 degrees on candy thermometer (or hard ball stage).

2. Beat egg whites in 1-1/2-quart bowl until stiff peaks form. Continue to beat while pouring hot syrup in a thin stream into egg whites. Add vanilla; beat until mixture holds its shape and becomes slightly dull. (Mixture may become too stiff for electric mixer). Fold in nuts (if you choose).

 3. Drop from buttered spoon onto waxed paper. Let stand at room temperature, turning candy over once, until outside of candy is firm--at least 12 hours. Store in airtight container.

Interview with Cleo

I sat down and did an interview with Cleo from Deviate today. It was hard to schedule, what with her busy...oh who are we kidding, she’s got nothing but time.

1. OK, let’s start off with an easy one. What is your name?

My name is Cleo Marie Perry. Well it’s supposed to be Cleo Marie Perry...we changed names so many times, I’m not sure what the last alias was.

2. Alias? What on earth did you need an alias for?

Uh...well that one’s kinda hard to explain, I mean I don’t think I was supposed to say that.

3. It has been said that you are the result of an experiment. How does that make you feel?

What are you, my therapist? None of your business. *sticks out tongue*

4. How would you describe your best friend?

My best friend is Gabe. He is strong, smart, good-looking (and he doesn’t let you forget it either hehe) and extremely loyal. He and his younger brother, Jack, were the ones who came for me when I was...lost.

5. You said he was good-looking. Do you have a slight crush on him?

Oh, no. NO! He’s just a friend. Even if I did feel that way about him, it would certainly get old when women hit on him everywhere we go!

6. Who DO you have a crush on?

*blushes* Next question! *sees my expression* Ok, ok...I guess that’d be Jack. It's just he's so NICE and he pays attention and...Why are you getting so personal?

7. This IS an interview, young lady! What do you expect?

Well I expected...

8. STOP that wasn’t the question!
..........

9. Sooo...can I drive your car? Please?

Sure! Just as soon as I figure out where the hell I left it! *grins mischievously*

10. One last question before we end. Can you tell me what “hotel cooties” are?

*blushes furiously* Well in my defense it WAS a nasty-looking place! I mean we very well could've caught some weird thing that caused  our flesh to melt off...right?

Thanks Cleo for taking the time to speak with us today. Come again anytime...only next time, maybe bring Jack or Gabe, too!

Nano Update

I am SO FAR BEHIND on Nano, but never fear! There is still two more weeks to finish the other 40,000 words... LMAO!
If you want to check up on my progress, I have a couple of wordcount widgets on the upper right corner of my blog (probably not visible on mobile).
I am hereby grounded and am not allowed back on FB or any other internet site (except to update my wordcount on nanowrimo.org) for the rest of the day.

Anyways, here are a couple of fun pics to inspire me to keep going and also keep you occupied in my absence. ;)

Nanowrimo Baby!

As you all know, I participate in Nanowrimo during the month of November. This means it literally begins November 1, and lasts until 11:59 pm November 30. One full month of writing. Will you meet your writing goal or will you be left in the dust by your competitors? There's only one way to find out: JOIN! LOL Last year I met some awesome people through this event, and while we were competing (as in we were both trying to "win", by reaching our word count goal), we still encouraged and supported one another! It's a really cool thing.

Anyway, I was surfing their website today (nanowrimo.org) because they made some interesting changes to the design. One such interesting thing is the ability to add widgets. I may live to regret this, but I'm going to post the "My Month" widget from Nanowrimo. This way, maybe I'll be shamed into writing every single day or else face the sad horrible red squiggle that day! If any of you are interested in trying Nano this year, add me as a writing buddy! http://nanowrimo.org/participants/sally-slayer

Here it is...be gentle ;)

That's about all for today, but as always have a great weekend and Happy Reading!!!

Giveaway Time Again!!

So if you look at the top right corner of my blog, you'll notice a new little gadget. It's the "Sally Slayer Found Her Lost Marbles Giveaway"! Yeah, I had a rough week and thought I had lost most of the most recent chapter I had done. I searched through flash drive after flash drive, and even searched through the external hard drive. Nada. :'( I was so distraught, and then as though I had been thinking about it all along, I remembered I had worked on the desktop instead of the laptop. I wondered if maybe by the smallest miracle of fate I had saved it there and didn't back up. Sure enough, there it was, totally unharmed and waiting for me to find it! Now you know why my giveaway has that title! LOL

I'm gonna go ahead and post the link just in case you don't feel like using the gadget (or are on mobile, since we all know blogger and mobile don't always play well together). It's not rafflecopter, because I wanted to try something new since rc can be buggy sometimes. Anyways, here it is:

Cover reveal for my new book: Deviate

COMING SOON!!

Blurb:

Everyday life for Cleo has always been hectic, but her parents' death opens
the proverbial can of worms that is her past. She finds out they have been on the
run her whole life from a corrupt government entity that has done something
strange to her DNA. Now it's all up to Cleo, with some help from her friends, to find
out what happened and take them down.

Excerpt:

"I asked if you were alright, Cleo.” He said gently, brushing a stray hair from my face.
Cleo. Was he speaking to me? My brows knit together in confusion, trying to decipher why he
was suddenly treating me so kindly. “I...don't really know. Is my name Cleo?” I felt a bit silly having
to ask such a ridiculous question, but it was necessary.
“Ok, obviously we have some issues here." He paused thoughtfully. "You don't remember
anything?” He seemed agitated, running his hand roughly through his dark hair. “Well this changes
things.”
“Are you purposefully speaking in riddles to confuse me or what? I tried to tell you earlier. I have
no memories from before I woke up today.” I was beginning to get angry, and my tone showed it.
He smiled fleetingly, apparently liking my spunk, but his mood sobered too soon. “I hoped they
wouldn't do this. I tried to get them to change their minds, but it did no good. As a matter of fact, it
took quite a bit of bargaining to convince them to allow me to see you at all.” He seemed to be
speaking mostly to himself as though he forgot I was even in the room. As though noticing he was not
alone, he addressed me again. “Cleo, you are in more trouble than even I thought you capable of. And
that's saying a lot!”
When I didn't immediately respond, he went on. “I guess you really don't remember. We were
friends, partners. My name is Gabriel. Gabe as you called me.”
He stared expectantly at me, looking for some spark of recognition. When he got none, he spun
on his heel heading toward the door. He muttered something about taking care and trying to come
back soon before glancing at the ceiling. The door slid open as though he had commanded it to do so.
Two more steps, and I was alone again with nothing to keep me company except the insane thoughts
swirling through my mind. It was like my life was some inside joke and I was the outsider that had no
idea what was so funny. I wondered how things could possibly have gotten to this point.

Excitement builds

I know I've been neglecting you lately (so sorry <3), but I'm hoping this will make up for it. My plans for this week are to do a final read thru on Deviate, and then format. Hopefully it will be complete in the next week or so. As soon as it's live, I'll post links so keep your eyes peeled!

Another cool thing that is happening next week: I'm going to be the featured author on Bob's summer author event! How exciting is that?! It will be here: http://streetteambob.blogspot.com and I'll  post links to the actual deal when it is there. Don't forget to enter her giveaway, too! http://streetteambob.blogspot.com/p/summer-author.html

Hope everyone has a wonderful week! Lots of love and Happy Reading folks!!

Coming Soon

When my betas get finished with Deviate, there will be a cover reveal. Trust me, you are going to want to stick around for it, because it's AWESOME!!! I can't wait for this book to come out so you can meet Cleo, she's a trip! She's snarky, hilarious, and doesn't hold back.

In other news, I'm still working on DP2 (at some point I really need to come up with a title lol), already started Deviate 2, and a couple of projects for anthologies (those aren't going so well so far...my other characters are screaming too loudly at me). I'm hoping to finish DP2 (for those of you that don't know, that's Dragon Portal 2) soon, and hope you will enjoy the direction Amaya's story continues in.

Later on (August, I think), my good friend, Bob, will be hosting a blog tour and guess who one of the featured authors is??? ME!  Stick around for more info on that as it comes closer.

Guess that's all my news for now. Hope everyone has a great week and Happy Reading!

On it boss!

I'm working on two different books right now, not to mention the two anthology submissions...Anyway, I've gotten quite a bit done on both of the books so far this weekend! As you can probably imagine, it's a bit frustrating, because they are both "Book 2". I'll leave you to guess the names of the actual book 1's. lol Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Happy Reading Folks!!

Exciting news!

This has been an awesome week! I've actually got two surprises for ya today. First, The Dragon's Portal has now been formatted for paperback, so those of you who were asking about that will be pleased. The purchase link is : HERE. Secondly, my Camp Nanowrimo project has been edited and sent to my beta readers! The title is "Deviate". I'm still trying to decide how to classify it, but I can already tell you it is not really for kids lol. There's a little cussing in it (Cleo didn't really care for my censoring) and some content that might possibly be too intense (no sex scenes or anything, just maybe too violent). My recommendation would be to preview before letting your kid read it. :) I also found an awesome cover for it, too! It's not by my usual cover artist (my Juju just had a baby, and he's SO CUTE!) but I think you'll be as pleased with it as I am. (Cover reveal coming soon)

Well, that's my news. Hope y'all had a great day and Happy Reading folks!

<3 ~SS

WIP is at the editor and DP2 is in the works!

So...yeah I haven't updated my blog lately. Sorry! I finished my camp nanowrimo WIP and sent it to the editor last week. I'm hoping there are not too many things to fix, but wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot. After all, nanowrimo is the month of sleepless nights (since I have kids and a job when else will I write lol) and I tend not to make much sense when I am too tired. She says so far it is OK, though. *YAY*

On my FB page, I had recently posted about regretting writing that one of my characters shares a common fear with me (no I will not tell you, have to read and find out lol). I was chatting with one of my friends/fellow nanowrimo competitors and was telling her how the scene played out. I guess it was pretty vivid, because we were both afraid we would be unable to sleep that night. LOL What sort of critter frightens you?

Well must get back to the batcave and get to work! Happy Reading Folks!

Cover Reveal for Touching Fire by Airicka Phoenix

Here's another new book from my friend Airicka Phoenix. Don't forget to add to your TBR list and Amazon/B&N wishlist! Here's some info:

Touching Fire Synopsis

Fallon’s on the run again, but this time, she’s not alone and she has a direction — she’s going to meet the man whose blood runs through her veins, the only man who can finally tell her who… what she is and why Garrison wants her so badly. But the truth may be more than she can handle when she falls from one world into another, one that shouldn’t exist and learns truths about herself that she may wish she never knew.
Faced with a reality so beyond comprehension, Fallon must accept the destiny she’s given because Garrison will stop at nothing to insure the success of The Amalie Project, even if he must do the unthinkable and become just like Fallon.
Touch Vengeance. Touch Malice. Touch Fire.

Excerpt
He was still waiting when I joined him again, composed. He stood with his back against the wall, his hands lost deep into the folds of his pockets. He was studying his shoes, his hair falling in thick fringes over his eyes. Those blue eyes rose, crystalline pools of electricity, and met mine, and my world stopped. My breath stopped. My heart would have stopped if it wasn’t drumming a tempo of pure elation at the sight of him. It ached, so desperate for the need to be closer. God, it was never close enough. I could crawl into him, burrow into his soul and it wouldn’t be enough.
I took a step closer, as unsteady as a new born calf. He caught my hand, reeled me to him without ever pushing away from the wall. I was pulled into the space between his feet, held there as he bent my arm and twisted it around my own waist. I was pressed into him, his thighs hard against mine. I felt his heartbeat through the fingertips he traced over the curve of my cheek.
“Stop touching me,” I gasped, cotton-mouthed, half-crazed by the possibility that he might take me seriously.
“Why?” His breath fanned over my dry and already parted lips.
I opened my eyes, surprised to find them closed. “Because I won’t want you to stop.”
The band of steel around my waist tightened until I was supported only by him, by his arm, his chest, his heat, his scent… God, I was home! My fingers curled into the soft material of his fresh, clean shirt. He must have changed, but it was yet another black t-shirt.
“I can’t.” His lips wrote each word against mine in the caress of butterfly wings.
My bones liquefied. I nearly fainted.
“Why?” The single word was a mere movement of my lips.
His free hand shackled my chin, guided my face up, held me prisoner to eyes much too animal to be human. “Because I don’t want to stop.”
If there was ever any possibility of remembering to breathe, it was gone. I was barely conscious, barely even sane as I sunk into blissful madness cured only by his lips… his touch.
“Touch me!” My desperate plea was met with a fierce growl.
His eyes, dark, feral, bore into mine. “Not here!”
I opened my mouth to protest, to beg, but his finger against my lips became a barricade, trapping the words on my tongue.
“Don’t!” he hissed. His finger drew back, traced the curve of my bottom lip. His eyes followed the slow caress the way a cat watches a canary. “I can’t promise I’m completely in control right now.”

Author Bio
Airicka Phoenix is the best-selling author of the Touch Series with short stories in Whispered Beginnings: A Clever Fiction Anthology and Midnight Surrender Anthology. When she's not hammering away at the keyboard, she can be found banishing pirates or crawling through the attic looking for lost treasure with her kids. She loves baking, gardening and reading. She also likes to travel and take pictures of everything she comes across. When asked, Airicka describes herself as a sarcastic basket case that has an unhealthy addiction to chocolate, old movies and really bad jokes. She loves to laugh, make friends and write. If she could have one wish granted, it would be to spend one day as a fly-on-the-wall inside Stephen King's mind. If she could have two wishes granted, she would ask for a castle dedicated entirely to her overwhelming collection of books.

Camp Nanowrimo is officially over!

Camp Nanowrimo is now officially over! Whew *wipes sweat from brow* I gotta admit it was tough and there were times when I wasn't sure whether I would make it! It all worked out in the end, and I met my goal of 50,000 words! The book I was working on for it is almost finished, too (that's a definite plus!) and will not take much until it's ready for a trip to the editor and betas. I can't wait to share this one with you, but be warned...it's not quite as kid friendly as The Dragon's Portal. There's some cursing in it, along with a few scenes that are probably a bit too violent or scary. This is just my opinion, though so take it however you would like. :D I'm still working on a title for it, and just had an idea for the cover (we'll see if it's actually doable or if we need to work more on it).

Anyway, just wanted to give a little update and brag a bit about completing Camp! Now to focus my total attention on Dragon Portal 2 (yeah yeah...I know I need a better title for it lol)! Have a great week and Happy Reading FOLKS!!!

Misbehaving Machines

I think I've already said how I was doing Camp Nanowrimo. Reworking a previous WIP that needed some help. I was writing along, updating my word count like a good girl, when I decided I needed to get off the laptop and switch to my desktop... Things were going great until I took a short break to update my word count again. I was short like 1,000 words! Apparently different word processor programs have different methods of calculating things like word counts, and it pretty much screwed my stuff up. :( So anyhow, I diligently began writing again, because let's face it that's what I do lol, and tada! Today I have made up the difference in word counts and come up ahead. (That's right...Go Sally...) I decided maybe it would be better to stick to just one or the other, and since I have Word (to go) on a flash drive I guess I'll be using that if I decide to switch back to my laptop. The first thing I need to do payday is buy Office...

Thought for the day: When making the decision to purchase a new computer, don't just assume it comes with Microsoft Office. Learned that one the hard way.

Hope everyone has a great day and Happy Reading Folks!

I'm bored, so here's an excerpt from Book 2! YAY *throws confetti*

K I'm kinda bored...so here's my favorite part (so far) on Dragon Portal 2 (still have to name it too lol) Keep in mind it's a first draft (hasn't been edited at all) so be gentle. :D

~Conversation between Layla and Amaya. Picks right up after DP 1 ends.~

“What do you want me to say Layla, that I’m fine – better yet, that everything’s fine and it’s all sunshine and rainbows? Cause it’s not.” She sighed again. “Things may never be fine again, ok. I don’t know. As for that crazy bitch, I know exactly what will happen to her.” The words and the slightly deranged expression on Amaya’s face sent a cold chill down Layla’s spine where it settled in the pit of her stomach.
“You know it won’t bring him back, right?” Layla’s voice was quite a bit softer this time. “It’ll only tear you apart, and besides we have a world to save, don’t we?” She tried to make a joke, which only made Amaya’s dour mood worse.
“Let’s just go. Everyone else is waiting for us.” Amaya said without feeling. “And stop trying to fix me. I’m not broken, and you know the old saying ‘if it’s not broken you don’t fix it.’” But I am broken.

Hope you enjoyed. Still working on this one...sorry lol. Maybe I really am the queen of tease? OK, back to work!

ENJOY!

I solemnly swear I'm up to no good...no wait that's Harry Potter...whatever

I know I haven't been updating here like I should. I swear it's for a good cause tho!!! I've been working on getting The Dragon's Portal ready for upload! All in the same week I got the cover back, the edits back, fixed those, formatted it and did the final read thru. Now I am in the process of uploading to Smashwords and Amazon, so cross your fingers and say a little prayer for that process to speed itself along. :D I'll probably post here and on my FB page when it actually goes live, so keep your eyes peeled! Much love and Happy Reading y'all!
