First of all, I was tagged by Val at: http://thescoopbymv.com/social-media-and-anxiety/

It's hard for me to talk about Anxiety, because like you I grew up with all of the stigma attached to it, but I'm gonna give it a shot.

1. Have you come out about your anxiety?

Well not exactly...I mean it isn't a secret or anything, I just don't talk about it too much. Guess I am talking about it now though lol!

2. How does your anxiety ever impact how you interact on social media?

When I'm going through a rough patch, I pretty much disappear from social media except for maybe the occasional meme or funny pic I may find that makes me laugh.

3. Do you have to push yourself to reply back to people?

Not usually, but it is hard for me to talk to people I don't know well. Though when people message me on the FB page or comments on the blog I do make an attempt to reply with something witty, nice or funny.

4. Is there anything that spurs you on to complete a goal?

My goals are usually selfish in nature, such as writing my first book: totally did it just so that dream would go away. Second book: just to prove to myself I had more than one book in me. (FYI, there's a whole ton of books inside me, I just haven't invented the telepathic keyboard yet). So if I have a goal, it's not generally something that will give me a panic attack, like a deadline.

5. When your anxiety gets bad, how is your presence affected?

It disappears. I hide out in the batcave or hang out with my animals until I feel I can people again.

6. When you finally come out of a bad period of anxiety do you feel you need to compensate with lots of material?

Not necessarily. I mean like I said I will post funny pics or a meme, but I feel like I'm spamming people if I start posting like crazy.

7. What’s one of the worst experiences (you feel comfortable sharing) you’ve had with your blog/page because of anxiety?

Well, the blog pretty much went unmanned for nearly a year because I felt like I had nothing important to say. I have to "maximum effort" for the Facebook page because it's hard enough to get/keep followers without having to start over from inactivity. I don't guess I have any "bad" experiences involving other humans, though (that's cause y'all are awesomeness!) it's mostly my own head that gets me down.

8. Do you participate in book signings? If so, how do you handle them?

Not yet, but possibly in the future.

9. What sort of support system do you have in place, if any?

Hubby and kids can usually tell and either try to cheer me up or give me space to work through it on my own. I also call "The Bob" and bug her until I feel better. Making someone else laugh even though I don't at all feel like laughing also helps. There's also my peeps who live in FB land. I can message them and not have to "people" in the traditional sense. That helps a lot! There's also
Anxiety & I , a Facebook page where you can anonymously discuss your anxiety.

10. Is there any advice you wish you had before you started your page/blog?

Just do it! Just kidding, don't jump in until you are ready to have the responsibility/obligation to get your stuff going. Make sure you have an excellent support system in place (admins, etc...) because guess what: it's effing hard to do it all yourself!!

To conclude: I hope this post helps at least someone... I would love to hear from you about your experiences!

<3 ~SS~

The Discussion Challenge:
Here’s how to play. Once you’re tagged, write an article using the questions listed at the bottom. You can always expand as much as you’d like, but it isn’t a requirement. (Don’t forget to acknowledge the blog that you got the prompt from!) Under the article, tag a blogger or three to participate after you and make sure to include the questions at the bottom. Oh, and you can post it wherever you feel comfortable. This means your facebook/blog/tumblr/whatever else I’m forgetting.

If you want to start your own just make sure to come up with a handful of questions to help encourage a rounded out article. Don’t forget to include the rules as well. Also, and this isn’t required, you should totally tag me on FACEBOOK or TWITTER so I can participate with yours.

The Questions:
1. Have you come out about your anxiety?
2. How does your anxiety ever impact how you interact on social media?
3. Do you have to push yourself to reply back to people?
4. Is there anything that spurs you on to complete a goal?
5. When your anxiety gets bad, how is your presence affected?
6. When you finally come out of a bad period of anxiety do you feel you need to compensate with lots of material?
7. What’s one of the worst experiences (you feel comfortable sharing) you’ve had with your blog/page because of anxiety?
8. Do you participate in book signings? If so, how do you handle them?
9. What sort of support system do you have in place, if any?
10. Is there any advice you wish you had before you started your page/blog?

In my defense, I HAVE been writing...I mean yeah, I don't have any new stuff out at this exact second, but that one WIP is at least halfway finished! I was just having a little bit of trouble with a couple of scenes not meshing the way I wanted. It's frustrating!

Anyway that's my excuse. I am working on getting something out, but I won't be satisfied with this one unless it's perfect, or at least a near to perfect as I can possibly get it.

I also have some plans for my previous books. I haven't gotten a chance to work on them lately, but I plan on giving them a complete makeover just as soon as I finish the current WIP! It's kinda exciting in a nerdy way. :D So I've made my excuses and now will get back to writing. <3

Lots of love my Slayers!Sally Slayerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03527966549434165148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4030884134500559246.post-52904715116285754752015-11-03T08:27:00.000-06:002015-11-03T08:27:47.499-06:00November is Nanowrimo!!It's that time of year again! November is for NaNoWriMo!

I'm participating this year, and am hoping to reach my goal of, well at least 50,000, but I'm hoping for a completed novel. This one has been stewing in my imagination for quite some time. :D

Dovey says it's not fair that I did not have to do an interview...so here we are. If it sucks, totally not my fault, blame her lol!!

1) Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?

I grew up in Small-town-USA, TX. I spent a LOT of time reading, so that helped with writing.

2) What are your five favorite books, and why?

First ones to come to mind are: The Count of Monte Cristo, All Harry Potter books, anything by Chanda Hahn, The Black Unicorn (Terry Brooks), and The Vorkosigan Saga (Lois McMaster Bujold).

3) What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

It’s hard for me to write unless Bobblehead Batman is judging...I mean watching me.

4) What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

The most surprising part is that not everyone in the world gets quite as excited by researching some random fact that I need for a book. They tend to stare blankly at me and edge uneasily away.

5) What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Not losing my mind, waiting for it to be finished.

6) Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

I learned there are some scary things in my Google search history...

7) How did you come up with the title of your book?

*sobs* It wasn’t easy. I suck at naming things!

8) Does Prince Charming exist?

Yes. No. Maybe...probably. I’m sure you’ll find him if you search hard enough.

9) If parents say, "Never take candy from strangers" then why do we celebrate Halloween?

...Dude! Why IS that?

10) Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

You’re AWESOME! Also, please don’t lynch me cause I WILL finish another book soon.
The lady we spoke to today has been one of my best friends for long enough that it makes both of us feel like old folks. Please give a warm Slayer welcome to: the lovely and talented Dovey Mayali Cralk! Her latest story, Warlock's Kiss, is part of the Twisted Sisters Anthology, Twisted Love. She was also a part of the first TSA, The Twisted Veil.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

-I was going to be an FBI agent!

When did you first start writing?

-haha! When the computer class teacher made us write poems to practice our typing and imagination skills!

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?

-short story, no. But I was writing an awesome evil Santa Claus (in the style of Goosebumps) in Jr. High, and even my teacher seemed to be enjoying it as I wrote it!

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?

-EVERYWHERE. We moved around a LOT when I was a kid, and the written word my only real source of constant companionship.

What are your five favorite books, and why?

-Five?! FIVE?! Well, I suppose I shall try...The Complete Collection of Jane Austen novels, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the Slow Burn series, Spark of Light, (dammit this is hard!!), Safe and Sound. Iunno! These are just the first ones that I loved to pop in my head!

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

-that while I suck at writing, I keep doing it anyway?

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

-Writing is the EASY part! Good grief!

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

-wondering if there was any point in even finishing.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

-that writing is HARD. Following through is HARD.

That making yourself push that publish button is HARD.
Do you have any advice for other writers?

-Beta readers, editor, and find people to do the work after the writing is over haha!

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

-hey sexy! All 5 of ya effing ROCK!
Hi, I'm Dovey, mother of children both with fur and without in Texas. Because of mothering and wifery, I don't get time to write until the wee hours of the morning. Which equals string cheese and copious amounts of coffee and Doctor Who! I've been writing on and off since I was a little tyke, and I hope you enjoy what I love creating.
Besides being one of the absolute coolest and most awesome writers out there, today's inteviewee is an awesome and cool person, too! Let's give our loudest and most welcoming...uh, welcome...to: the fabulous Riley Ross!!! On to business...
Her latest stories, The Getaway and Coming Undone, are part of the Twisted Sisters Anthology, Twisted Love. She was also a part of the first TSA, The Twisted Veil.

As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?

I really wanted to be an actress. However my failure to memorize lines for a play that I was in stopped that dream in its tracks.

When did you first start writing?

In second grade we had to write short stories. Writing always stuck with me after that. I would go through notebooks of short stories. I stopped for an extended period of time but picked it back up in 2009.

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?

Yes and it was horrible. It was about how I hated being picked last for kickball. I was a menace to everyone when it was my turn to kick.

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?

I grew up in a small town in Virginia. My location didn’t really influence my writing.

What are your five favorite books, and why?

French Silk by Sandra Brown, Dragon’s Portal by Sally Slayer (*blushes* Shucks), The Chronicles of Valen by Dovey Mayali Cralk, Becoming Us by Amy Daws, and Smother by Lindy Zart. These are my favorites because they are so well written and you can immerse yourself into these books and forget about all of your troubles.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I can plan out the course of the story but the characters take over. When I get into the writing zone, I lose track of time and I forget everything else around me.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

I think what surprised me the most was how twisted and dark my sense of humor can be.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Writing the final chapter for my characters. It is hard for me to say goodbye to the characters that I created.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

I learned that you should have fun with writing. It should not be a chore to churn out words. Go at your own pace and be in competition with no one.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Write the story how you want to write it. Do not let others tell you that you should not write.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you for reading my stories.
While growing up in rural Virginia, I dreamed of making my escape. Don’t get me wrong I loved the beauty of Virginia but I didn’t have the happiest of childhoods. It was a struggle to survive an alcoholic and abusive father but reading was my escape to a happier place. I was reading Jackie Collins books before the age of 12. Jackie Collins, Sandra Brown, Danielle Steele and others were my inspiration to write stories. I would love to thank them for providing me with a safe haven to escape to. Also a huge thank you goes to my grandparents for introducing me to wrestling and romance novels. My grandmother would always read a Harlequin romance novel; I got my love of books and wrestling from her. I joined the Air Force when I was 18 and I didn’t look back. I was in the service for twelve years and on my first day, I met my version of Prince Charming, we are parents to two little Siberian Huskies, Sammie and Demon. Our furbaby family has grown to include Brutus, Shy, and Fluffy. So for those that are in dark situations dreams do come true.

We have with us today an amazing (not to mention one of my favorite) up and coming authors: Kaydence Rayne! Let's give her a warm Slayer welcome! (And by that, I mean like clapping, cheering and happy stuff.) Her story is called, Forget About Me, in the second Twisted Sisters anthology, Twisted Love. The first anthology, The Twisted Veil, can be found here.
Had some personal junk come up, and one of those things included hubby having surgery. I did get bored the other day, and submitted a short story, so if you're jonesing for some SS writing (I know it's been SO LONG!), here's a link to that. A Time Bomb for Christmas?

In other news, I managed to write over 3,000 words on the second Dragon Portal book (still unnamed)!! Anywho, it's been a busy month or so, and again I apologize for not being here as often as I should.
It's slow work right now, because I have quite a bit of extra junk on my plate (in my personal life), but I AM still working on them. Sorry. You should join in on the fun happening at my Facebook page: here. I've actually been posting the Thursday Teaser on there, too (and more regularly at that). I will make another attempt at posting on a regular basis on here, but I promise nothing lol! Hope this week has found everyone well and happy. Lots of love, and HAPPY READING!! <3
As you know Camp Nanowrimo is underway, and I'm currently concocting a new book for that. I got stuck on a certain chapter; I was just really unclear where I was going with it. Got it knocked out, and started on the next one, and got some awesome character bios and monsters to go with them. And, no I'm not explaining about the monster part...yet. ;) Hoping to get it finished this month for Camp, and then off to the editors (covers: let's not even go there lol) and betas. If all goes according to plan (lmao) it should be ready in a couple of months. Cross your fingers, toes, and eyes. We'll see if that helps. Hope everyone has a great week! <3 ~SS
Here's a batman funny for you in apology for my neglect. (Bobblehead Batman says he approves of this joke lol)
Making some awesome progress, and you guys will be excited to know there are some answers to all those unanswered questions in book 1. :) I'll tell ya, I like first person POV, but it sure can be limited. For example, you pretty much only know what the character telling the story knows (in some cases that's not a lot lol). Also, I have a couple of WIPs (likely standalones) going right now, too. Guess that's about it for today. Short, sweet and to the point, just like Cleo.
In other news, you should go like this page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thewritestuffauthors. There may or may not be a HUGE giveaway sometime in the next week or so. I might also have a small one here on my blog and FB page (https://www.facebook.com/sallyslayerwrites). Currently I am working on a project for an anthology that'll be out sometime either this summer or early fall. If you're a fan of The Dragon's Portal, you'll want to check this one out. It's a PREQUEL that explains some of the stuff that happened long before DP1. I am also (still) working on DP2 and Deviate2 (we may have to do a "name my book" contest, because so far I'm stumped LOL). On to the teaser from DP2. This happens pretty much right where The Dragon's Portal left off.

As soon as she exited the cave, she was assaulted by a barrage of questions. At least Layla had waited until they were alone before she started in on her though. “Are you alright Maya? Who the heck was that crazy woman, and why did she…do…um…that to Aiden? Did you see that crazy explosion? What are we going to do?” Layla laced the last question with despair. Obviously her sister was concerned for Amaya’s well-being, though it was already getting tedious to keep answering the same questions about the one subject she knew she didn’t have the heart to speak of – Aiden. With a heavy sigh and just as heavy of a heart, Amaya’s eyes finally met Layla’s concerned green orbs, and the affection displayed there effectively silenced the caustic reply she had planned.

“What do you want me to say Layla, that I’m fine – better yet, that everything’s fine and it’s all sunshine and rainbows? Cause it’s not.” She sighed again. “Things may never be fine again, ok. I don’t know. As for that crazy bitch, I know exactly what will happen to her.” The words and the slightly deranged expression on Amaya’s face sent a cold chill down Layla’s spine where it settled in the pit of her stomach.

“You know it won’t bring him back, right?” Layla’s voice was quite a bit softer this time. “It’ll only tear you apart, and besides we have a world to save, don’t we?” She tried to make a joke, which only made Amaya’s dour mood worse.

“Let’s just go. Everyone else is waiting for us.” Amaya said without feeling. “And stop trying to fix me. I’m not broken, and you know the old saying ‘if it’s not broken you don’t fix it.’” But I am broken.

That's all folks! Crud. Looks like I'm having cartoon withdrawals... Hope you enjoyed the teaser, and stick around for news of the giveaways! Happy Reading Folks!!! <3
(Don't get all excited just yet.) ~SS

Happy ANTI-Valentine's Day!

I'm going to post a very very short snippet of Sally's recent work on Deviate book 2. (That's just a working title, don't worry.) She will likely be pissed at me because I'm going out of order from her prearranged plan, and it's not even Thursday, but here it is.

*unedited snippet, be gentle*

Well that would explain all the hearts and tiny cupids that were everywhere! I always hated that holiday. Even though I knew it made me sound like my paranoid crazy mother, it just felt like a sucky holiday. I mean who does that kind of crap? “Here, let me give you a giant box of chocolate (to make you fat), take you out to a heavy meal (to make you fatter), watch some corny movie (two inactive hours of popcorn and candy to make you...FAT), and then take you home to allow all the fat to congeal.” Yep just call me the anti-cupid.

Hope everyone has a freaking awesome day, and don't eat too much chocolate! ~Cleo (Deviate)Sally Slayerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03527966549434165148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4030884134500559246.post-86039833739231323512014-02-13T03:30:00.000-06:002014-02-13T03:30:01.956-06:00Thursday TeaserYeah, alright...so the whole "post at least every other week" thing didn't pan out as well as I'd hoped. I have been trying to find time during my regular work schedule and writing work schedule, and surprisingly enough didn't find much. LOL I WILL try to do better from here out, though.

Since we did an excerpt from "The Dragon's Portal" last time, I think this time we will do a quick "Deviate" excerpt. I will apologize in advance, since the main character in this one, Cleo, has a bit of a potty mouth.

*WARNING* This book may contain language or situations not suitable for younger readers.

I stared in desolation out the window as random fields sped by. Adam had mentioned that we were going to have to take "the long way" now, but I didn't grasp that we were going to be traveling by such backwater, out of the way means. I hadn't even come across a single sign of civilization other than the random farmhouse in over an hour. My bladder was not a happy camper right now, and I needed either a nap or a mega dose of caffeine. "We gotta find a place to stop. I'm dying over here!" I wasn't really trying to be cranky, but I wasn't trying not to be either. At first there was no response from the driver's seat, and that worried me -- what if he was asleep at the wheel! After a few seconds wait -- OK, one second -- I reached over and smacked him right in the bicep. "Hey wake up over there!"
He turned to face me, seemingly in shock from the mere fact I had the audacity to touch him. "What do you want from me, Princess?" The last word came out mocking. "There's nowhere to stop! Even if there was, we are so far behind schedule it's not remotely funny. We should have gone twice this distance by now, but NO, someone had to be an idiot and bring her phone!" He shot a cutting glare in my direction. Wow, someone's Mr. Grumpy Pants today... I could hear him continuing to grumble under his breath, and today the hostility was a little more than I could bear without enormous amounts of caffeine.
"Dammit! OK, here's the deal. Either you pull over right now or there's going to be a huge puddle to clean up! And just what the hell's wrong with finding somewhere to stop for caffeine and possibly food? I'm starving, exhausted, and my bladder's about to explode! I don't know what your problem is." I didn't bother trying to hold back the explosion of words that came out. I was angry, pure and simple. The way he had a stupid smirk on his face pissed me off even more. Wait, mustn't think of piss...aw man it was getting to the point it was painful. "C'mon, please stop." I wheedled like a child.
Adam checked the rear-view and both side mirrors, exhaling a deep sigh. "Fine, but you'd better learn to control your bodily functions from now on." He pulled off the road onto the meager shoulder, if you could even call it that. It was a tiny two- lane stretch of highway with hardly enough room for two trucks to pass side-by-side. However, I didn't care at this point as I leapt from the car as soon as it stopped. It shouldn't feel this good to relieve one's bladder, but it certainly did. I took an extra moment to stretch my legs; while I loved my car, it was a bit cramped after hours of nothing but sitting. As I bent down to stuff myself back into the seat, I noticed a lecherous grin on Adam's face as he turned away. What was that look; was he checking me out? This would bear further investigation. I leaned toward him, pretending it took all that movement to buckle the seatbelt. My hair slid off my shoulder, brushing his hand -- stupid hair, next time stay where you're supposed to be -- causing him to jerk it away from the armrest. "Sorry." I mumbled, cursing myself for missing an opportunity to annoy him. At that moment the radio, which had only been working on and off, crackled as it began to play "Bad Rain" by Slash. I cranked the volume up, which earned an exasperated huff and pointed stare, and leaned my head back with an elated sigh. This was such an awesome song, and I let myself finally drift back off into true sleep with the sounds of the most awesome guitar-playing lulling me quickly to dreamland.

Well that's it for this week's teaser. Hope you enjoyed it. If you would like to hear more of Cleo's story, you can find it on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Deviate-Cleo-Perry-Novel-ebook/dp/B00EDNT1DW
I'm gonna call it the Thursday Teaser. I will try to post a teaser at least every other Thursday, though weekly is my goal. This week I think we will do a short teaser from The Dragon's Portal (book 1).

Then the most ghastly noise she had ever heard assaulted her ears, followed by a deep rumbling tremor. “What was that?” Amaya asked in horror. Another rumbling tremor was followed by more, almost like a giant's footsteps.

Aiden was quick to answer, “A dragon, miss. He guards this area, and probably thinks we have done something wrong. Humans are not exactly supposed to loiter in this area of the woods. I think we should leave this area right now before we end up being his next meal.”

Amaya gave him a skeptical look and turned to look behind her to figure out what the noise really was. To her great surprise, she could make out a huge beast with deep sapphire blue scales that matched her clothing almost exactly. She saw leathery wings and a huge spiked tail, also. Dragons don’t exist! Amaya thought and with that fainted.

If you would like to hear the rest of the story, you can purchase here.

Not much has been happening so far this week...oh, who am I kidding, it's been one freakin train wreck after another, but I've muddling my way through. I haven't had much of a chance to write so far, but I'm hoping to fix that tomorrow. I'll probably be working on the second Dragon Portal book.

In other news, Ariel over at Sassy Princess Reviews left an awesome review for both The Dragon's Portal and Deviate. If you're interested, here they are: Dragon Portal & Deviate.

So, yeah I kind of cheated. I don't usually make cookies, but divinity...we make it every year. It is so good and VERY addictive.

Divinity
Original recipe makes 4 dozen (approximately) Change Servings
2 2/3 cups white sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup water
2 egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2/3 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
Directions

1. Cook sugar, corn syrup, and water in a 2-quart pot over low heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. (On humid days, use 1 tablespoon less water.) Cook, without stirring, to 260 degrees on candy thermometer (or hard ball stage).

2. Beat egg whites in 1-1/2-quart bowl until stiff peaks form. Continue to beat while pouring hot syrup in a thin stream into egg whites. Add vanilla; beat until mixture holds its shape and becomes slightly dull. (Mixture may become too stiff for electric mixer). Fold in nuts (if you choose).

3. Drop from buttered spoon onto waxed paper. Let stand at room temperature, turning candy over once, until outside of candy is firm--at least 12 hours. Store in airtight container.

This means it literally begins November 1, and lasts until 11:59 pm November 30. One full month of writing. Will you meet your writing goal or will you be left in the dust by your competitors? There's only one way to find out: JOIN! LOL Last year I met some awesome people through this event, and while we were competing (as in we were both trying to "win", by reaching our word count goal), we still encouraged and supported one another! It's a really cool thing.

Anyway, I was surfing their website today (nanowrimo.org) because they made some interesting changes to the design. One such interesting thing is the ability to add widgets.
I may live to regret this, but I'm going to post the "My Month" widget from Nanowrimo. This way, maybe I'll be shamed into writing every single day or else face the sad horrible red squiggle that day! If any of you are interested in trying Nano this year, add me as a writing buddy! http://nanowrimo.org/participants/sally-slayer

Here it is...be gentle ;)

That's about all for today, but as always have a great weekend and Happy Reading!!!
